1. It’s nothing I hadn’t seen before – Shane Battier taking a charge from one of the largest human beings on the planet.
It happened in Team USA’s win over China on Sunday night. Battier stood in the path of China center and new Houston Rockets teammate Yao Ming, after Yao picked up a loose ball at midcourt and figured he’d run over the only defender between he and the goal – Battier.
I remember when Battier once took a charge from then-Lakers’ center Shaquiille O’Neal. Shaq got the ball near the top of the guy and drove to the basket. Defenders were jumping out of the way like they were at the running of the bulls.
All except Battier. He held his ground, Shaq planted him and Battier slid to just about to the first row of seats under the basket. The most amazing thing was the officials actually whistled Shaq for the charge.
I remember turning to Griz beat writer Ron Tillery and saying, “That’s the most gutty thing I’ve ever seen.”
2. Round of two of ESPN’s Monday night football tonight with the Saints and Cowboys exhibition from Shreveport.
Seems like more people will be interested to see if there is any better chemistry in the ESPN between Mike Tirico, Joe Theismann and Tony Kornheiser than in last week’s initial telecast. Kornheiser needs to loosen up.
3. This is a great way to start a college football season.
On Friday, Arizona State coach Dirk Koetter names senior quarterback Sam Keller his starter. On Sunday, he decides that no, sophomore Rudy Carpenter is his starter. Keller, who is a heckuva of a QB, left practice on Sunday and may transfer.
“It’s simple. I made a mistake on the quarterback situation and I’m changing my mind,” Koetter said after Sunday’s workout.
Koetter said he couldn’t sleep on Friday after naming Keller the starter. He said he then sought advice from his athletic director, coaching staff, senior players and “unity group” on Saturday. According to the East Valley Tribune, several players requested a meeting with Koetter after the initial decision and told the coach they believed the job should go to Carpenter.
Wow! Who’s running that team?
