So I was taking a look back at some of the other Tiger teams of the past 25 years that have struggled and noticed one striking similarity.

The 1981 team that went 1-10, the 1982 team that went 1-10 and the 1986 team that went 1-10 couldn’t score.

The 1981 Tigers averaged 7.4 points per game. The 1982 team averaged 11.7 points and the 1986 team averaged 9.5 points. The single-digit scoring averages are the only ones posted by the program since the mid-1950s.

While the 2006 Tigers are threatening to match the 1-win seasons of the 1980s, there’s a reason coach Tommy West might appear slightly encouraged by the prospect of picking up a few wins in November. The Tigers are averaging 22.2 points per game. Memphis teams that have averaged 22 points or more since 1992 have averaged 6.3 wins.

Six wins are impossible this season — Memphis would have to run the table to finish 5-7 — but if the Tiger defense (allowing 32 points per game) can keep opponents to one fewer touchdown per game, there may be another victory out there for the U of M.
