Dan Wolken

Just a heads up for all of you fans who follow recruiting closely: The U of M men’s basketball office doesn’t expect to receive any letters-of-intent Wednesday, which is the first day of the week-long early signing period.

Memphis does expect point guard Derrick Rose and shooting guard Jeff Robinson to sign those letters on Wednesday and put them in the mail, meaning they should arrive at the Memphis basketball office later in the week.

Many recruiting Web sites list Will Bogan, a 6-10, 290-pound center from Bell City, MO, as the Tigers’ third committment. However, based on several conversations with people who have knowledge of the situation, I do not expect Bogan to sign with the Tigers. From what I understand, he did not develop enough over the summer and probably would not be a good fit with the Memphis program.

I think the Tigers’ coaching staff would be fine with a recruiting class of Rose and Robinson.

Assuming there are no transfers or NBA defections, the Tigers’ 13 scholarship players next year would be:

PG Derrick Rose
PG Willie Kemp
SG Jeff Robinson
SG Tre’Von Willis
SG Doneal Mack
SG Chris Douglas-Roberts
SG Antonio Anderson
F Robert Dozier
F Pierre Niles
F Shawn Taggart (transfer from Iowa State, not eligible to play this year)
F Joey Dorsey
C Hashim Bailey
C Kareem Cooper

Obviously Kareem Cooper’s situation is up in the air right now. Cooper is suspended indefinitely due to a violation of team rules, and Calipari still hasn’t revealed whether Cooper will be back.

But even if Cooper doesn’t return, it’s not automatic that Memphis would use that last available scholarship this year. There’s also the possibility of an early NBA defection, most likely by Dorsey, Dozier or Douglas-Roberts. That could also change the equation, but for now I think the Tigers are pretty well set for next year.
