Here’s a look at some of the favorites, the not-so-favorites and the teams that nobody wants to play in our district and Division 2 region basketball tournaments. Most get underway today and run through next Wednesday.
District 16-AAA boys at Northside
Favorite: No. 2 seed Central (21-5) - Senior guard Reuben Clayton is good enough to carry Warriors to title. (open play Friday vs. Melrose, 7:30 p.m.)
Darkhorse: No. 1 seed Fairley (19-6) - City-championship meltdown against Raleigh-Egypt could serve as motivation. (open play Saturday vs. Northside, 7:30 p.m.)
Outlook: Watch out for defending Class AAA champ and third-seeded Hamilton (19-8), which finished the regular-season with seven straight wins and has a talented enough mix of seniors to win this tourney. (opens play Friday vs. Kingsbury, 4:30 p.m.)
District 16-AAA girls at Northside
Favorite: No. 1 seed East (25-1) - Western Kentucky signee Amy McNear and Co. have proven they are the class of this district. (open play Saturday vs. Kingsbury, 6 p.m.)
Darkhorse(s): No. 2 seed Northside (22-3) and No. 3 seed Central (22-6): With both teams on the same side of the bracket, only one will get the chance to take down East in Wednesday’s final. (Cougars open play Friday vs. Hamilton, 6 p.m.; Warriors open play Friday vs. Fairley, 3 p.m.)
Outlook: It’s East’s tourney to lose.
District 15-AAA boys at Houston
Favorite: No. 1 seed Ridgeway (21-5) - Roadrunners have the size (in 6-5 junior Martino Brock, 6-4 guard Jason Jones and 6-7 center Trevon Malone) and the quickness (with 6-3 guard Anthony Wooten and 6-2 guard Nick Walls) up front to run away with this tourney. (opens play Saturday vs. Collierville, 7:30 p.m.)
Darkhorse: No. 2 seed White Station (22-8) - Handed Ridgeway its only district loss this season (63-60 at Ridgeway) and played the Roadrunners to the wire in a 75-73 overtime loss at White Station. (opens play Saturday vs. Germantown, 4:30 p.m.)
Outlook: Friday’s loser-goes-home, 4:30 p.m. quarterfinal pitting No. 4 seed Overton and No. 5 seed Wooddale could be tournament’s best game.
District 15-AAA girls at Houston
Favorite: No. 1 seed Houston (22-8) - The Lady Mustangs boast enough horsepower to win, but a potential semifinal showdown with No. 4 seed Ridgeway, which handed Houston its only district loss this season, looms. (opens play Saturday vs. Collierville, 6 p.m.)
Darkhorse(s): No. 2 seed White Station (23-7) and No. 3 seed Wooddale (16-6) - A young Lady Spartan bunch showed plenty of heart in a tough city-championship loss to East on Thursday, while Wooddale boasts the area’s top senior in Georgia Tech signee Deja Foster. (Spartans open play Saturday vs. Kirby, 3 p.m.; Cardinals open play Friday vs. Germantown, 6 p.m.)
Outlook: A state-tournament qualifier last season, No. 4 seed Ridgeway’s recent domination of this district appears to be over.
District 14-AAA boys at Craigmont
Favorite: No. 1 seed Raleigh-Egypt (25-3) - Led by Georgia Tech signee Maurice Miller (left), the Pharaohs are playing their best basketball at the right time. If you don’t believe us, ask the Fairley Bulldogs, whom Raleigh-Egypt dismantled, 69-34, in Thursday’s city championship. (open play Monday vs. Cordova/Bartlett winner, 5 p.m.)
Darkhorse(s): Craigmont (20-7) and Bolton (19-6) - both talented enough to at least make it competitive against the Pharaohs in Wednesday’s 7:30 p.m. championship game.
Outlook: Raleigh-Egypt should only add to its current 13-game winning streak.
District 14-AAA girls at Craigmont
Favorite: No. 2 seed Bartlett (24-3) - Yes, they’ve lost to top-seeded Millington twice this season, but the Lady Panthers, with seniors Ashley Herring and Nikki Thompson and sophomore Jasmine James, have the 1-2-3 punch to knock off anyone in this tourney. (open play Friday vs. Raleigh-Egypt, 6 p.m.)
Darkhorse: No. 1 seed Millington (25-3) - You’ve got to respect this young, talented group of Lady Trojans, who’ve rattled off seven in a row since a six-point road loss at Cordova, including a 64-55 win over Bartlett at home. (open play Monday vs. Craigmont/Bolton winner, 2 p.m.)
Outlook: Bartlett isn’t going to turn this district over to Millington without a fight.
District 16-AA boys
Favorite: No. 1 seed Mitchell (18-12) - Jerry Johnson’s Tigers have experienced their share of lumps this season, but they are easily the deepest and most talented team in this district. (open play Monday vs. Westwood/South Side winner at Mitchell, 7:30 p.m.)
Darkhorse: No. 2 seed Sheffield (18-8) - Can go as far as high-scoring UTEP signee Randy Culpepper takes them.
Outlook: The Tigers should prove too deep for Sheffield to handle in Wednesday’s boys final at Hillcrest.
District 16-AA girls
Favorite: No. 1 seed Mitchell (22-5) - Junior Andrea Holmes, one of the area’s leading scorers at 24 points per game, leads a Lady Tiger squad that bullied District 15-AA regular-season champion Washington around in Thursday’s Class AA city championship victory. (open play Monday vs. Oakhaven/South Side winner at Mitchell, 6 p.m.)
Darkhorse: None
Outlook: Mitchell didn’t finish 10-0 in this district for no reason. The Lady Tigers won’t be challenged.
District 15-AA boys at Treadwell
Favorite: No. 1 seed Washington (23-1) - Fred Horton’s Warriors are loaded for a state-tournament run, and will get a big boost if junior guard Patrick Lee returns as expected next week after missing the last two weeks with injuries he suffered in an automobile accident. (open play Saturday vs. Trezevant/Frayser winner, 7:30 p.m.)
Darkhorse: None
Outlook: Not even rival Carver will be able to stop the Warriors from hoisting the championship trophy come Wednesday.
District 15-AA girls at Treadwell
Favorite: No. 1 seed Washington (23-6) - The Lady Warriors had better do some soul searching following an ugly city-championship loss to Mitchell. Washington certainly has the talent, however, to make a cake walk of this tournament. (opens play Saturday vs. Trezevant/Frayser winner, 6 p.m.)
Darkhorse: None
Outlook: A much-improved Treadwell squad should make Wednesday’s final, but don’t bank on the Lady Eagles to toppling Washington.
Division 2 West Region boys
Favorite??? This one is wide-open, and we mean wiiiiiiiiiiiiide open. Top-seeded ECS (11-11) earned D2 Large’s top seed by knocking off more talented teams MUS, CBHS and Briarcrest down the stretch in the regular season. Then there’s St. George’s, which boasts a star in junior Elliot Williams and enters play as the No. 1 seed from D2 Small. What is certain is that only three squads can qualify for state, meaning some good teams will call it a season as early as Saturday.
Darkhorse(s): If ECS is the favorite, then Briarcrest, CBHS, MUS and St. George’s should all be considered contenders as well.
Outlook: Saturday presents some huge potential match-ups at Briarcrest, as CBHS will likely take on St. George’s in a loser-goes-home 7:30 p.m. quarterfinal and MUS will probably face a quality FACS team at 4:30 p.m. in another elimination game.
Division 2 West Region girls
Favorite: No. 1 Large seed Briarcrest (25-4) - The Lady Saints don’t have one great individual performer, as they did last season with D2 Miss Basketball winner Alliesha Easley, but they do have enough experience and depth to roll through this tournament.
Darkhorse: No. 1 Small seed Lausanne (26-4) - Sure, Lausanne has a star in Tennessee commitment Lauren Avant, but have the Lynx played a tough enough schedule to prepare them to knock off tourney favorite Briarcrest? If both can get by their quarterfinal opponents Friday, we’ll find out Monday when they meet in a 6 p.m. semifinal at Briarcrest.
Outlook: Monday’s Briarcrest-Lausanne loser will have its back against the wall Thursday in a consolation game that will determine the third and final qualifier for the D2 state tournament in Nashville.
