Ron Higgins

ALABAMA: One of the most unsettled spots on a roster full of them at Alabama is right tackle. The position was considered up for grabs in the spring, with senior Chris Capps and junior B.J. Stabler considered the front runners. But Mike Johnson has emerged and wants to make the position his own.

** He’s in only his second year as an offensive coordinator, and his first in the ultra-competitive SEC, but Major Applewhite already feels at home.

ARKANSAS: Clark Kent. Nine letters, first name starts with C. Casey Dick. Nine letters, first name starts with C. But while Clark Kent’s job was to become Superman, Casey Dick’s job as Arkansas quarterback is to make sure the Supermen around him have room to fly.

** Kicker Alex Tejada brings a big reputation and a big leg to Fayetteville. But that doesn’t mean Houston Nutt will just give him the placekicking job.

quentin.jpgAUBURN: After spending the Iron Bowl terrorizing Alabama quarterbacks, Quentin Groves (right) has decided to spend less time in clubs and more time mentoring Tray Blackmon.

FLORIDA: Who starts at quarterback for the Gators? All together now, Tim Tebow. But who backs up Tebow? That’s a big question as camp starts in Gainesville.

aronwhite1.jpgGEORGIA: Freshman receiver Aron White (left) knows he’s going to be catching passes for the Bulldogs in his career. At the moment, he’s just not sure whether it will be as a wide receiver or as a tight end.

KENTUCKY: The Wildcats defense in 2006 was — how do we put this delicately — porous. Full of holes like a pound of Alpine lace swiss cheese. A sieve. We could go on like this. But defensive coordinator Steve Brown believes the ‘Cats can be more than mild this year.

LSU: LSU guard Will Arnold is a talented, injury-prone player. Asked if he considered himself still the starter after problems the past two years. Great response: “I rolled in with the first team, and that’s all I’m rolling with,” he said. “I’m not a second-team guy. Yesterday (Saturday) I ran a little second team, but today nothing but the first team.”

The Commercial Appeal’s annual Football Tour makes a stop at LSU for an Aug. 20 story.

MISSISSIPPI STATE: He played quarterback in high school, but look for Zach Smith in the Bulldogs’ defensive backfield rotation when they open against LSU.

SOUTH CAROLINA: Two of Steve Spurrier’s recruits were considered eligible to play by NCAA minimum requirements. But the USC admissions people denied the players admission. You didn’t think Spurrier would keep quiet about it?

TENNESSEE: Memphis isn’t the only place it’s hot in Tennessee. But that doesn’t keep Vols junior offensive guard Anthony Parker from being ready to don the pads.

VANDERBILT: Sophomore cornerback D.J. Moore made big contributions as a freshman. The Commodore coaching staff wants leadership this year.
