One player who might have been overshadowed during Saturday afternoon’s scrimmage by the continuing quarterback saga? Greg Hardy, who has positioned himself quite nicely to do a little of everything — check that, a lot of everything — for the Rebels this season. Hardy was solid at defensive end, which has been de rigueur for the sophomore since he arrived at Ole Miss last season, fresh off a standout career at Briarcrest Christian. But Hardy made his biggest statement over the weekend at wide receiver, catching a pair of touchdown passes from senior Seth Adams.

To be completely honest, Adams pretty much lofted up jump balls for Hardy to corral, but Hardy didn’t disappoint. He outmaneuvered a pair of defenders in the left side of the end zone for his first TD catch, from 9 yards. The second was 5-yard reception in the left side of the end zone.

It’s no secret that Hardy will play his share on offense this year, a situation that’s much the product of necessity (the Rebels are thin at receiver) as Hardy’s versatility. I wrote about the coaching staff’s plans for Hardy last week and so far, so good, as far as coach Ed Orgeron is concerned.

“We’re going to use Greg out there,” Orgeron told reporters after the scrimmage. “When he was in, you guys saw that he was a force.”

It also became apparent during the scrimmage that the Rebels plan to utilize freshman running back Reggie Hicks as a versatile playmaker. Based on statistics I kept myself (at Orgeron’s behest, Ole Miss did not provide reporters with stats), Hicks caught four passes for 28 yards — and he was slippery and explosive.
