I just got the results from the Crappie Masters tournament held Saturday on Sardis Lake.

It’s amazing to me that people can catch so many crappie in this awful heat.

Here’s how it came out:

The Bass Pro Shops Crappie Masters tournament trail held a divisional qualifying event Saturday on Sardis Lake.

Nearly 100 anglers braved the 98-degree heat for a chance to qualify for the Mississippi State Championship, scheduled for September 21-22 at the Grand Casino Resort in Tunica.

Alabamians Coy and Gilford Sipes took first place with seven crappie that weighed 9.38 pounds. They caught their fish, trolling minnow-tipped Roadrunner jigs in 10-15 feet of water.

Second place went to father-son team of Kenny and Kerry Colson of Kentucky with a toal weight of 9.08. The team trolled homemade jigs 12 feet deep to catch their fish.

Two teams tied for third place with a weight 8.94. Mississippians Ricky Odom and Danny McCormick said they were pulling crankbaits about 100 feet behind the boat. Kent Driscoll and Terry Bryd from Tennessee pulled crankbaits at in 10-15 feet of water.

Tracy McIntosh and John Woods took big-fish honors with a crappie that weighed 1.90.
