Taking a closer look at how The CA’s Dandy Dozen teams fared in Week 6:

No. 1 White Station 44, Kirby 14: First, let’s give credit where credit is due: Kirby, a team that scored a combined 28 points all of last season, was up 7-0 for a short time in this one before eventually succumbing to the area’s top-ranked team. The Cougars, with former Melrose coach Chester Flowers Jr. now at the helm, are on their way up. White Station, on the other hand, just continues to roll. All together, the Spartans amassed 395 total yards and 18 first downs in this one.

No. 2 ECS 35, Fayette Academy 7: Why is Adam Currie not a more highly regarded college prospect? And don’t give me that same old tired answer about size (Currie is 6-0 at the least, a solid 200 pounds and has legs like tree trunks from playing catcher on the Eagle baseball team). All he’s done this season is complete 63-of-102 pass attempts for 1,154 yards, 13 TDs and ZERO interceptions). He’s rushed for another 427 yards and eight touchdowns. He should have more on the table than just one scholarship offer from Cornell.

South Panola 17, No. 3 Olive Branch 3: This one just simply reminds us that no matter how good OB is, South Panola, which extended its nation-best winning streak to 66 games with its victory Friday, should not be doubted. The Tigers didn’t even need Ole Miss committment Darius Barksdale in this one.

No. 4 Millington 26, Bartlett 7: With Bartlett out of the way, Millington plays just one more opponent this season with a record over .500 (Bolton). Ridgeway, Overton and Cordova, the Trojans’ other three remaining opponents, are a combined 4-16 this season. With apologies to Bolton, this smells like a region title for Millington, the first for the Trojans in 14 years.

No. 5 Whitehaven 49, Hamilton 0: Whitehaven couldn’t have been any better defensively last week, as the Tigers held Hamilton to minus-11 total yards. That’s right. The Wildcats went backward. It’s about to get much tougher for Whitehaven, which travels to face undefeated Houston this week.

No. 6 Houston 14, Collierville 7: The Dragons are reeling, having lost three straight since losing starting quarterback Gabe Bouldien to a wrist injury in the first quarter of a Week 4 loss at Whitehaven. Houston, meanwhile, got its running game going again Friday with the return of senior tailback Tavin Davis (138 rushing yards, one TD), who’d missed the last five weeks with a broken hand suffered against Bolton. The Mustangs will need that running game this week against a faster, more athletic Whitehaven team.

No. 7 West Memphis 51, Searcy 0: What else needs to be said here? The Blue Devil defense has allowed just one offensive touchdown this season in six games. It’s state title or bust this season for West Memphis.

No. 8 CBHS 63, Briarcrest 3: Do you all get the feeling, too, that CBHS is getting better and better every week? The Brothers rolled up a monstrous 313 RUSHING yards against Briarcrest. It’s on to Class 3A Mitchell this week, and then it gets really serious for the Purple Wave, which will meet an undefeated ECS team on Oct. 19 (which just so happens to be my birthday-PARTY TIME!!!).

No. 9 St. George’s 40, FACS 14: St. George’s Ken Netherland is the P-Diddy of the coaching game. Not Tim Thompson.

No. 11 Fairley 34, Kingsbury 28: A huge region win for Fairley, which travels this week to take on Southwind in a tuneup for its Oct. 19 meeting with Melrose. A win there would all but assure the Bulldogs of their first outright region title since 1997.

Cookeville 20, No. 12 MUS 17 OT: The Owls were good enough defensively to win Friday, as MUS allowed just 196 total yards. But MUS managed just a field goal in overtime, while Cookeville got a 6-yard TD run from Zach Salada. MUS now has a bye week to regroup before finishing out the season vs. Briarcrest, ECS and St. Benedict.
