Go ahead, pile on Damon Stoudamire.

“Shut up and …sit!” Right?

Stoudamire’s desire to be traded or have his contract bought out through his agent, Aaron Goodwin, isn’t a slam on rookie Mike Conley. Everybody in the free world, and on Pluto, knew the Griz would hand Conley the keys to this team sooner or later.

Conley, the fourth overall pick, is the future at point guard for this franchise. Not Stoudamire. Not the great Kyle Lowry. Head coach Marc Iavaroni is doing the right thing by starting and playing Conley significant minutes. The organization has to develop him – see what the former Ohio State standout can do and what Conley needs to be taught.

That said, Stoudamire clearly didn’t expect to be told that he will only be the emergency point guard – someone the team doesn’t intend to play unless there’s an injury. Is it ridiculous for a 13-year veteran who is serviceable after coming back from a serious knee injury to want to play with another year left on his contract?

The Grizzlies are doing what they have to do at that position, and Stoudamire is doing what he must do in this situation. The squeaky wheel gets the trade/release in professional sports. And just as “fans” don’t mind their team making business decisions – however poor – players have to make business decisions – however poorly received – in their best interest.

Not every detail will become public in this saga. But here’s one: I’m told that Stoudamire’s contract calls for him to play in 55 games and average 20 minutes this season. If Stoudamire doesn’t, he’ll receive roughly 50 percent of the $4.65 million he’s due for the 2008-09 season.

So don’t think for a second that this is PURELY a basketball decision.

If this was simply a basketball decision, then Conley would start and Lowry would be the third (insurance) point guard instead of Stoudamire at this point and time. Lowry, off the bench, has played the most minutes at point but he’s regressed defensively. Lowry makes the same mistakes (see: turnovers) over and over and his decision-making is poor.

Lowry is an excellent energy guy in an Earl Watson mold. But he’s not starter material. Frankly, Iavaroni lost the majority of those seven games by three points or less in large part by staying with Lowry at the end of games.

Stoudamire is a stabilizing force, a leader and a decorated NBA veteran who doesn’t deserve to be treated like this. The Griz can and should go to a youth movement. But Stoudamire has earned the right not to want to watch.

You have to explain to me how he is getting mistreated. Do you think if he had been performing at a high level he would have been demoted so soon? He had the chance to EARN his full salary for 2008-09 on the court and stunk. He makes bad decisions also. The same freaking bad decisions he has been making his entire “decorated” career….he shoots to freaking much. His bad shot is just as bad as a turnover and for a sub 40%FG shooter and his poor wheels, it usually results in a fastbreak for the opposition.

However, don’t miss your chance to poor mouth the Grizzlies but next time don’t be afraid to put it in your main article.

knucklehead

The GREAT Ron Tillery

Thank you for that bit of comedy

Evil

This is a basketball decision. Mike Conley is a better player than Damon. Kyle is a better back up than Damon. If Damon wants to play he should stop allowing his man to blow by him and get in the lane on every possession. That would help the team a lot and then someone may want to trade for him.

It’s also a dumb move. Do you know why? We know he wants to be traded. We also know the Grizz would love to trade him. How does this demand help that happen? Answer is, it doesn’t. It makes it less likely, and that’s why it was dumb. He can sit next to Brian Cardinal for all I care. No buyouts.

Also, riddle me this. What contending team wants a point guard that cannot guard anyone?

MY OPINION ON THE GRIZZLIES IS NOT DAMON ALONE. FIRST OFF YOU GET FAIR POINT GUARD PLAY OUT OF THOSE THREE GUYS. THE PROBLEM IS A NUMBER OF THINGS. THE FIRST IS THAT THE TEAM HAS TO MAKE A COMMITTMENT TO DEFENSE. PAU SLOWS THE TEMPO OF THE GAME DOWN WHEN HE FACES THE BASKET TO MAKE A MOVE. AND THE COACHES SYSTEM IS BASED ON AN UP TEMPO OFFENSE. MY OPINION TO TURN THIS SEASON AROUND YOU HAVE TO GET AN ENERGY GUY WILLING TO SACRIFICE HIS BODY NIGHT IN AND NIGHT OUT THATS COMMITTED TO OFFENSIVE REBOUNDS BLOCK SHOTS, A GUY LIKE WE HAD, LORENZEN WRIGHT. A COMPETITIVE TEAM WINS WITH DEFENSE. WE ARE NOT GOING TO WIN VERY MANY GAMES TRYING TO OUT SCORE OTHER TEAMS. WE DONT HAVE THE PERSONNEL TO DO THAT. WE NEED AN EFFORT GUY WITH CONFIDENCE. THE TEAM HAS GOTTEN USE TO LOSING. WE HAVE TO SEARCH THE D-LEAGUE OR MAKE A TRADE FOR AN ENERGY GUY THAT IS GOING TO DOMINATE HIS POSITION. PAU DOES NOT DOMINATE HIS POSITION. BY HIM BEING A POWER FORWARD IN THE WEST NO MATTER HOW WELL HE PLAYS THE WEST IS SO STRONG THIS YEAR YOU WOULDNT NOTICE HOW WELL HE PLAYS BECAUSE HE GIVE UP THE SAME AMOUNT OF POINTS AND MAYBE EVEN MORE REBOUNDS AT HIS POSITION. WE NEED GOOD WEAK SIDE HELP TO COMPLIMENT PAU AND WE CAN BECOME SUCCESSFUL TEAM LIKE PORTLAND IS. WE NEED TO PLAY ANGRY OUT THERE SHOW TEAMS EVEN THOUGH WE ARE NOT PLAYING WELL THIS YEAR WE ARE NOT GOING TO BE DOMINATED. WE NEED TO SHOW SOME EMOTION OUT THERE GET THROWED OUT OF A GAME OR SOMETHING GIVE THE CITY HOPE. GRIZZLIES, OUT OF ONE YOU GUYS I KNOW WE HAVE A BEAST WAITING TO GET OUT. RELEASE THE BEAST WITHIN YOURSELFES CARE ABOUT LOSING NOT JUST INSIDE, SHOW IT!! AND I PROMISE YOUR SEASON WILL TURN AROUND.

Give Me a Break

C’mon Tillery. The reason you posted this on your blog instead of making it an article in the paper is because you know how silly it really is. You’re all buddy buddy with Damon and feel sorry for him, so you thought you’d get on your high horse for him and tell how he’s being “mistreated.” It’s funny to think that a broken-down has-been deserves anything at all. He’s lucky to get 50% of next year’s salary. You won’t see me crying when Damon “only” makes 2.5 million next year for being a 15th man.

Ernest D.

Yeah, Ron…that’s pretty lame. He isn’t being “mistreated” by the front office. Damon should pack it in and retire. Not every guy gets a chance to play at the NBA level…he did, for 13 years and for my money it is over for him. He’s seen his best days on the floor as a starter and is not worth keeping around as even an emergency back-up. Let’s move on, as a franchise and as a veteran player. He will be alright.
