Here’s a question: How long will it take Kentucky to match the number of SEC wins Tulane already has?
Seriously, it’s time to recognize what Tulane has done the past few years under Dave Dickerson. Pretty interesting, isn’t it, that Dickerson leaves Maryland’s staff to take the Tulane job, and immediately Tulane starts to get better while Maryland goes into the tank? So props to a very good guy for beating Auburn, Georgia and LSU, in addition to St. John’s, all teams that Tulane really should have no business beating.
Anyway, the point of this is that I got an e-mail today from Tulane’s SID asking all the AP top 25 voters to consider Tulane this week. I certainly will consider them, though I don’t know if I can put them ahead of teams like Rhode Island and Oklahoma, who I left out of last week’s poll. Either way, Tulane will have a chance to get there — and possibly to the NCAA Tournament — if it continues to play the way it has for the past few weeks. Now, to get there, Tulane will have to beat Memphis in New Orleans on Feb. 20. And that sure seems like an iffy proposition, given how badly Tulane has matched up with Memphis the past few years. Here’s Tulane’s C-USA schedule:
UAB twice
Marshall twice
Rice twice
East Carolina twice
Southern Miss twice
(Frankly, Tulane should go 10-0, 9-1 at the worst against this motley group)
SMU once (home)
Memphis once (home)
Houston once (home)
Tulsa once (road)
UCF once (road)
UTEP once (road)
Given that schedule, I would not be surprised to see Tulane go 13-3 or 14-2 in the league. At 14-2, and with a win over Memphis, Tulane would be 23-6 overall heading into the C-USA Tournament. Given the 3-0 SEC record, that would be enough to get them in. Even with a couple unfortunate early losses, Tulane may be the league’s best hope for a second NCAA team.

Kentucky may be into February before they record their 3rd SEC win, but I predict they will end Vandy’s unbeaten streak in Rupp on the 12th if Meeks and Jasper each play 20 minutes or more. Right now the Rupp mystique is gone, but Vandy coming into Lexington for the 3rd straight year (and 5th straight overall) and leaving with a “W” is hard to fathom. If that happens, I guess we can start calling KY the new Dore mat of the SEC.

You are on to something, Tulane and UTEP are the up and comers in CUSA and Dickerson has done a
terrific job considering the last few seasons,
playing in a dump for a gym,etc.
All the Tigerspeak about USM,Houston,Tulsa
being vastly improved is unfortunately
based on wish not reality. Houston is down to 2
possibles, beat Zona and UM once or win the CUSA tourney.
Tulane is a longshot but could definitely get
some sympathy in the selection room if they
follow the path you laid out. Getting to CUSA
tourney TV game and playing a great game vs
UM or winning vs any other team which might pull
an upset is the vital resume highlight.

I got a chance to see Tulane play and win two games against quality opponents on the road in my home State of Hawaii. I have to say that at this point in the season they would make a great underdog to cheer for in the NCAA’s. They are a well coached team that could surprise many should they get invited to March Madness………
I for one will hope they get in….
I also got a chance to visit the Tulane campus in New Orleans during the Sugar Bowl although my team didn’t fair well we had a great time there.

Well Dan, I take it back. No way UK beats Vandy next Saturday. Pitino’s pressure completely wilted our guard play yesterday. He exposed the single largest of Ky’s many weaknesses….poor guard play. So it’ll be 3 straight wins for the Dores in Rupp. Yikes! This from today’s Herald-Leader.
Late in the first half Saturday, Kentucky had rallied from an early eight-point deficit to take a three-point lead (31-28). However, on its final four possessions of the half, Kentucky turned the ball over four times.
Leading 31-30 at the start of the second half, the Cats fumbled the ball away on three of their first four chances. That makes eight straight possessions yielding seven TOs, for those scoring at home.
What made Saturday’s chaos with the basketball especially disappointing, it came with formerly injured Kentucky guards Derrick Jasper and Jodie Meeks each logging 31 minutes.
