Parents, students, teachers, alumni, and the neighbors should attend these prep tournaments. We always hear about what is wrong with the schools yet, the community shows little support for high school sports programs. Perhaps the children would behave better if the community got more involved in their lives and share some of those unforgettable moments with them. Besides the schools could us the popcorn revenue for students needs. So go out and support these tournaments enjoy the game and keep a watchful loving eye on the children.

I am a huge sports fan but more importantly I am a parent of a teenager. I attended the regional championship game at Arlington High School Wednesday night between Raleigh-Egypt and Craigmont partially because my son attends Arlington and both teams are very good and I figured it was going to be an exciting game. The game was great and Raleigh-Egypt won on a last second shot. As my wife and I were preparing to watch the presentation of the trophies and other awards what followed really was sad and embarrassing more for me due to the fact that all involved were young Black men. As the players were celebrating a few of the players from both teams got involved in an altercation and what followed was complete confusion student wanting to fight other students it was pitiful. We all had to clear the gym and the players were sent to the locker room so no presentation of trophies or recognition for any of the players because of the actions of a few. Neither coach had any control over their own players as a matter of fact the Raleigh Egypt coach seems to distant himself from the entire situation leaving it to his assistances to try and get his team off the floor. As a concern parent this is what is wrong with our youth. The players that were involved should be suspended from the next game and a rule should be put in place that any team that gets involved in any altercation will be disqualified from further participation in league play. We need to start holding our teenagers accountable for their action. The sad part is that most of the parents that are familiar with the so call school rivalry say that this kind of thing happens often when these two teams play. Well that tells me all I need to know about the schools and the leadership from both parents and school officials. They have let this continue to happen without holding anyone accountable. I say kids don’t have issue we as parents and school officials need to hold them accountable for their actions and not cover for their actions just because they can shoot a basketball.
