After fantastic weather for Monday’s opening round of the National Championship for Field Trialing Bird Dogs, some nasty stuff moved into the region Monday night, forcing the postponement of Tuesday’s morning brace.

I just talked with Charles Eoff of Fitch Farms in Holly Springs, Miss., and he says they haven’t made a decision on the afternoon run. Charles is a big-time field trialing enthusiast, and he’s nice enough to keep me updated on the trials when I can’t be there in person.

If this rain gets out of here, they may go ahead with the competition. But it certainly won’t be as enjoyable today as it was for a giant gallery on horseback Monday afternoon.

The next two dogs scheduled to run are Short Skirt, owned by Jimmy Honea of Oakfield, Ga., and Cedar Oak Bee Sting, owned by Tom Honecker of Findlay, Ohio. That’s Brace 3.

When they’re done, Brace 4 will feature the much-anticipated run of defending champion Funseeker’s Rebel, owned by Miamians Frank and Mercy Fonseca. Rebel will run with Black Range, owned by David O’Connor of Bullard, Tex.

All of the dogs have a really hard act to follow after a great run by Whippoorwill Wild Agin on Monday. The dog, which is owned by J.D. Huffman and Terry Terlep, recorded 10 finds in a full three-hour run.
