The UAB band opened up by playing Michael Jackson’s “Thriller.” Will it be an appropriate soundtrack for tonight’s game? Possibly. The atmosphere is definitely right for it, but I’m not sure the team is. If Robert Vaden can’t get much done tonight with his injured groin, the Blazers will be in real trouble tonight. If Vaden is good — and when he’s good, he’s really good — this could be very interesting.

There are a lot of Memphis fans in the crowd here. Though it’s definitely not the 3,000 or so that were predicted on message boards, there is a lot of blue sprinkled throughout Bartow Arena, not counting sections 225 and 226 which are filled with Memphis fans.

UAB really needs this one. Crazy as it sounds, the Blazers have an outside shot to make the NCAA Tournament. The bubble is really that weak this year, and the win over Kentucky will look better and better for both UAB and Houston. If UAB can pull off a win tonight, you’ll hear a lot more talk about the Blazers and the NCAAs, despite some brutally bad losses on the resume.

If you take emotion out of the equation, the Tigers should win this one by 15. But emotion counts for a lot in college basketball, and it wouldn’t shock me if tonight was the night they went down. Interesting question: Given a choice between losing tonight and beating Tennessee next Saturday, which would you choose Tiger fans?

I spent Friday night at the annual Ducks Unlimited sponsor banquet at DU National Headquarters in Memphis.

As usual, it was a fantastic event.

There were a lot of great people there, including Ducks Unlimited Executive Vice President Don Young.

The auction items were incredible as always, and I’ll be really interested to see how much money they raised in the name of conservation. One shotgun actually sold during the live auction for $3,700, and numerous items sold for $1,000 or more.

Almost everyone there left with something, whether it came from the live auction, the silent auction or the raffle.

Everyone also left full. The menu featured garlic-encrusted beef that was outstanding and Jalapeno duck poppers that I could probably live on exclusively for the rest of my life.

It was a great evening - and it was all for the ducks.

After asking fans to offer submissions for what dunk he should perform during the Sprite Slam Dunk Contest on YouTube, Rudy Gay has made a selection.

Gay’s first dunk of the contest will be from a dunk submitted by Brandon Lacue form Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. The 22-year-old is a member of a group called Team Flightbrothers.

Here is Lacue’s dunk on YouTube that Gay will attempt first tonight. It’s the first dunk on the video:

Watch here!!!

The NBA and Gay are also flying Lacue into New Orleans to sit courtside during the Sprite Slam Dunk to watch Gay perform. He will also attend Gay’s special “dunk practice” earlier in the day.

The Sprite Slam Dunk is apart of NBA All-Star Saturday Night airing at 7 pm on TNT.
