Just as I finished my blog, I looked up and all the sudden tempers began flaring between Joey Dorsey and two Southern Miss players — Jeremy Wise and Sai’Quon Stone. Apparently, as the Tigers were leaving the court from warm-ups and Southern Miss was coming on the court, there was some shoulder bumping between the two teams. All the sudden, Dorsey and Wise/Stone were in each other’s faces.
Assistant coach Derrick Kellogg jumped in between and pulled Dorsey away and yelled at him to get into the locker room.
I don’t know what was said, and I don’t know who started it. But folks, this is just sad.

I read that one of the USM players gave Joey a shove in retaliation for something that happened when Memphis beat USM at the Forum.
“Sad” indeed. I’m going to go cry now.

I don’t know what happened, although the version I heard is that a USM player threw a punch (I assumed it didn’t connect based on the way it was said - this could have also looked like a shove).
One undeniable fact is that Joey takes more physical and verbal abuse before, during, and after games than most of us could imagine receiving.
That is part of the game plan. Of course, he has to a great extent brought it on himself with the way he has responded over the years. But I think coaches “gooning up” on Joey is at least as SAD as his responses.

Dan, you are the one that is sad! You shouldn’t make negative comments about people when you don’t know the true story!!

I agree with lenetzach in regard to his comments on Dorsey bringing some of these incidents upon himself.
No one saw what happened or what was said, so I’m not here to pass judgment.
At some point though you have to know you’re a target and avoid those situations as best as you possibly can.
They won the game and clinched the conference - that’s what matters most.

Mr. Wolken…Did you read this thread?
We’re waiting for your response. It really does seem that you have taken it to a personal level against Joey. Was he one that didn’t talk to you after the Tennessee game?
You owe Dorsey, and Tiger fans, an apology for your remarks in your blog yesterday. The only thing I see “sad” is you for making personal judgments instead of reporting news or stories.

I have to agree with you Dan. Why is there all this sympathy for Joey? He is tanking at the time of the year when we need him most. I think it is immaturity - and that’s pretty sad because he is a grown man. As a senior on this team who means as much as he does to our success, he should be one of the guys leading us. Instead he is almost a non-factor late in the season - at least by what his standards should be. Even if other teams and fans are “out to get” Joey, he needs to understand they are doing that to take him out of his game and do his speaking on the court.

I now have the definitive answer on what happened, for the record, from the mouth of the instigator, as reported in the Hattiesburg paper:
*The Golden Eagles (15-13, 7-7) came out of the locker room with a no-fear attitude, with USM sophomore guard Sai’Quon Stone making a statement prior to the game. Stone tangled with the biggest man on the Memphis team, senior forward Joey Dorsey, who stands 6-foot-9, 265 pounds.
“I pushed him first because I wanted to let Dorsey know that he wasn’t going to intimidate us,” Stone said. “I had to knock the bully out of him.”*
I told you it was part of the game plan.
Is that good sportsmanship?
It’s easy to say that Joey should walk away and not talk, and he should. But while everyone from Sportscenter to this blog reports that Joey was in another players’ face, no media outlet outside of Hattiesburg has yet reported the rest of the story.
In fact we NEVER hear about what other teams and players do, and THEY are never held accountable by the press for THEIR poor sportsmanship.
Since we have to hear about what people disapprove of from the Tigers, I would like to at least hear proportionally equivalent criticism of Tigers’ opponants, rather than the apparent assumption that it’s OK for them to do anything they can to try to win, because the Tigers are bigger and better.

Why is everyone trying to put that little confrontaction on Dorsey? And that’s all it was, a little confrontation. USM should take the brunt of the blame for it escalating a far as it did. The USM players were coming down to the court at exactly the same time the Memphis players were coming off the court. USM should have had security offcials there to ensure nothing happened. Both teams had to enter the floor through the same opening which was not that big.
Dorsey is just the only player that SportsCenter and the rest of the media outlets have chosen to show in their clips. There were other Memphis players that were involved. But this really is getting blown way overboard. It was not that serious.

If you have never been to the Reed Green facility
in Hattiesburg, you have missed absolutely zero.
What a dump, it is an embaraasment to CUSA.
Lines at the only concession area create a bathroom blockade, only 1/3 of the arena has seats
the rest is railroad tie bleachers that are
ok if you don’t mind the guy behind you knees in your armpits and a sore butt, aching back.
The place is a fire hazard and the security must
have been undercover.
The loudspeaker system is inaudible and scoreboards are cica 1919.
Hattiesburg however is full of nice folks and they
deserve a better arena. No wonder nobody goes to the games, count me as one who won’t again.
Dan Wolken had the best seat in the house.

Dan, everyone knows you hate Joey but please try not to act like too much of a punk when your writing this blog. Be a man and just give us the facts. Nobody cares about your feelings towards anything! Just shut up and tell us how our Tigers are preparing to win the national championship. It’s sad our own hometown newspaper is against the Tigers!
March 2nd, 2008 at 10:14 pm
I agree w/ Billy. Dan, before you start making personal attacks at a person, get your facts right first. You act just like those ESPN guys, always coming up w/ these negative comments toward our Tigers. Lets be honest, you’ve been slacking on your job, what has happened to keeping us up-to-date on Tiger recruiting. If you’re not feeling the love for our Tigers anymore then find something else to write about because this is becoming a lil insane.

You’re the one that is sad. You just assumed it was Dorsey’s fault. Get a grip and comb your hair.
