I think I’m just going to turn off the sports networks for the week. I just heard Digger Phelps and Hubert (I hate everyone not in a “BCS conference) Davis pick Mississippi State and Pittsburgh as the sleeper teams in the South Region. That’s right Davis is picking Mississippi State to beat the Tigers in the 2nd round. Their disdain for all things “non-BCS” conference or “not appearing on ESPN” is shining through.
I also made the mistake of turning on the radio this afternoon. A local talk show co-host (I won’t say who) said that the selection committee set up the possible Memphis-Texas matchup in Houston because “Memphis didn’t play any significant road games.” Are these people just stupid or do they just play an idiot on radio? So what was the reasoning last year? Or they year before?
Haven’t we heard the “Memphis will be the first #1 to fall” before? We sure have and it was just two years ago. Just a reminder to those predicting this, the Tigers were the LAST to fall in ‘06.
Just what do the Tigers have to do to get a little respect? 99-9 over the past 3 seasons is simply amazing. If it was so easy then teams would have done it before. The basketball team’s disrespect is a lot like the way many treated DeAngelo Williams. That kid belonged in New York in the Heisman race. But since the media essentially trashed him, he didn’t get the votes. The difference is that the basketball team has the ability to stop the disrespect by winning their next six games.
I won’t be going to Little Rock. First of all my daughter’s 21st birthday is Friday so the wife is expecting me to stay home for that. Secondly, I’ve got the grandbaby trip next month so I can’t spend the money for a $250 ticket to the game and other costs associated with going to the game. Now if someone wants me to drive to LR and drive them home (so you partake in adult beverages), I’ll be more than happy to do that for a ticket to game. You wouldn’t have to pay for gas. In fact, I’d drop you off at the door then park. Then pick you back up at the door after I go get the car. Am I begging? You betcha. Another idea would be maybe the CA needs to send a blogger over there on their pennies. Ok, that was really wishful thinking.
There will be a #15 upset a #2 this year. It’s been a while since it has happened so I figure it is time for an upset of that magnitude. I kinda sorta expect quite a few upsets on Thursday. That is the day you normally see them I’ve noticed. Once they happen they wake up the higher seeds for the games on Friday.
I won’t be doing a bracket for the tournament. I’ve mentioned the betting on the Tigers issue I’ve got before. Entering a bracket constitutes betting on the Tigers for me so I won’t be doing it.

Calm down. A “Sleeper team” by definition is not who you think is going to win, but who you think might win if your favorite to win doesn’t. Hubert may be an idiot, but Digger picked us to win the whole thing.

I believe it was Jay Bilas that picked the Tigers to go all the way, not Phelps. Regardless, do you honestly think anyone outside of Memphis is going to give them credit? The fact is C-USA is a weak conference. People aren’t looking at the non-conference schedule.
Until the Tigers get into a better conference, and that may never happen, the Tigers aren’t going to be recognized in the same light as is UNC, Duke, UCLA, etc.

I believe Tennessee is the sleeper, they are the only team with talent, bench strength, speed, and
conditioning to run with the Tigers.

First, I’d be the first in line to get us into a BCS conference. But they’re not inviting folks in at the moment. That does remind me of something though. I always respond to the SEC folks who say Memphis “should” play SEC schools every year. To which I respond with “Then get us in the conference.” That is something they don’t want. Memphis in any BCS league will really help the Tigers.
99-9 in college basketball in 3 seasons against any conference is a heck of an accomplishment. I’ll give them that the bottom of C-USA is as bad as anyone in the country. But teams like UAB and Houston would be able to play with anyone. The RPI is not a good standards either. Primarily because the bottom teams’ numbers are raised by the top and middle of the conference and the bottom teams drop the top and middle teams number down. Cal hates the RPI and is correct when he calls it a “Really Poor Indicator.” C-USA had 9 teams with winning records by the way.
The SEC was 2-10 against top 25 teams OOC. But since many of them played weak OOC schedules like Ole Miss and Florida, they inflated their numbers. When a team rolls through their non-conference like the Rebels then go 7-9 in the conferece, you have to wonder about their strength. And when a sub .500 team rolled through their tournament it showed me that their power was all hype this year.
Finally, how can Tennessee be a sleeper? They are a #2 seed. And if they are to play the Tigers again, it will be on April 7th. And would that be special. Folks like Jay Bilas, Hubert Davis and Seth Davis wouldn’t know what to say.

Hubert is an idiot to pick MSU… but thats my opinion. I feel as if we should be a SEC team, but at the same time I guess $$ has a big influence. For some reason Memphis doesnt get enough respect as we should.
I have Tenn out after they play UNC!! SO… we’ll see… off to hoop hysteria we go!!!
GO TIGERS GO!!!

Everyone knows that the 2007-2008 college basketball season had many UPSETS. In the NCAA MEN’S BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT any team can beat any team on a given day. That is why every team is a sleeper, except, North Carolina, they are they are the No.1 seed and the team to beat.
