Dan Wolken

Pretty much everybody in the know expects Evans, the McDonald’s All-American guard from Philadelphia, to pick Memphis tomorrow when he announces his college choice. All you have to do is read the story I wrote in today’s Commercial Appeal quoting his brother or this one from the Philadelphia Daily News to get a sense of where the kid appears to be leaning.

But how about this one today, from a live ESPN.com chat with Evans and a couple other high school prospects playing in the Jordan Brand All-American Game on Saturday?

Willie (Portland, OR): Tyreke, Kemba, Drew, and Ed, which NBA players did you watch/idolize growing up?

Tyreke Evans: (12:50 PM ET ) I watched Penny Hardaway when he was coming up, how he played and how he got a lot of assists.

Too much.

I was just reading your link to the story in Philly and it mentions the PG that plays with Evans in HS might be coming to Memphis. What do you know about that? Could he fill Garcia’s spot if he doesn’t qualify?

A colleague of mine points out the impeccable timing here - within two days of the scheduled Tyreke Evans announcement we learn that: 1) Rose is set to announce his departure to the NBA and 2) Cal is re-upping with the school.

As those are probably the two main conditions that Reke had prior to signing, I say, Go Tigers. Way to get it done.

Dan, what are the chances that Ebanks signs on?

Martin to Marist
Memphis assistant Chuck Martin will be named the new head coach at Marist, according to Mike DeCourcy of the Sporting News.

Martin, a former point guard at Monmouth, was hired by John Calipari to join the Tigers in September 2006 after serving on Norm Roberts’ initial staff at St. John’s. Martin began his college coaching career at Manhattan College, where he was an assistant to current Seton Hall coach Bobby Gonzalez.

The Marist job opened up when Matt Brady left to take over at James Madison. St. Benedict’s Prep head coach Dan Hurley turned down the Marist job over the weekend, as first reported by ZAGSBLOG.

With Martin’s departure, we wonder how this might impact the recruitment of both Devin Ebanks and Lamont “Momo” Jones, both of whom have strong relationships with Martin, a St. Raymond High School product. Ebanks is considering Memphis, West Virginia, Rutgers and Texas, while Jones, who de-committed from Louisville, is looking at Memphis, Pitt and Xavier among others.

Yes, apparently, is the answer to your question. Now it’s time to get Ebanks to sign.
