Ronald Tillery

According to a Spanish web site, www.as.com, the Grizzlies and Marc Gasol have agreed to a three-year, $9 million deal. You won’t get a response from the Griz on this one because they can’t legally negotiate with or sign Gasol until July 1, under NBA rules.

But it wouldn’t surprise me if the Griz already have, or will have, some indication of what Gasol is willing to do before the draft on Thursday. His decision impacts what they will do with the 5th pick.

Responses to “Marc Gasol joining Griz?”

Rick Smith

Ron,

I think getting little Gasol would be greta. What do you think of the prediction in ESPN the Magazine about taking Dorsey with the 28th pick?

Concerned Person

I am so tired of the Grizzlies going out of their way to draft foreign and white players that I have become completely disgusted with the whole organization.

Every since they have been in Memphis, they’ve dump millions and I mean millions on worthless white non basketball playing players who have only drained millions from the franchise and have not produced at all including Paul Gasol.

If they want a Great White Hope, they should simply say so and be done with it. However; I must remind them that Memphis demographically is 65% black. Also, the other thing this organization does not realize is that the whites and blacks here in Memphis have some of the highest basketball IQ in the country.

Even they are not satisfied with these selections that they have done over the years. Anyone with any sense can see they need someone to that can bang and get rebounds and run the floor with excellent speed instead of a player prodding along. They are already experiencing low attendance and are not winning at all. And yet, they do not seem to know that they need blacks to purchase season tickets also to be successful here in Memphis.

Yet, they continue to overlook the Memphis players time and time again. They act as if drafting what you need is so complicated. The whole front office including Jerry West who helped started this mess is a bunch of morons at the highest level. The owner is just a Cash Cow and thats all he is.

Even Boston woke up and realized that they needed to go and get the best players regardless of race. But the Grizzlies continue to go across the world recruiting some white player who has never played a day of NBA basketball in the U.S. and say they are better than our players here.

Hell; the U.S. set the standards for NBA basketball and continue to do so. These so called foreign teams are filled with good American basketball players and that is why they are experiencing some measure of success. Yet, they continue to overlook players like CDR or Joey Dorsey while other NBA teams are secretly drooling over them.

The owner needs to sale this team and leave town and take this bunch of losers with them including the coaching staff, which nobody else wanted. This is ridiculous what they are doing and they expect people to purchase season tickets???? Give me Damn Break!!!!

How can you bring race into this at all! If he is a good ball player whether white, black , or foreign then sign him! Why does Memphis feel like it has to bring race into everything. Dallas doesn’t complain about having a white star player . . . because he is a great ball player! If the Grizz win that will bring fans, not whether they have too many white players.

Concern

Rob,

I brought race into it because the Grizzlies have brought race into it. Any blind person can see that and even my white co-workers have brought this fact to my attention.

Right now , we are still paying Brian Big Country money unless our insurance picked up the tab and we are paying Brian Cardinal “80K contract” a ridiculous amount of money who averages around 2 points a game and there a few others which I want go into.

Why is it that early on all of the white players on this team got long secure contracts and not one of the black players did not???? with the exception the guy from Duke???

If you noticed the trend, none of the established black players who’ve been through here do not want to ever play for this organization again and alot these players are not problem players either. This is the organization MO and that is just a fact….

They have ran off alot of establish black players who are flourishing elsewhere and were flourishing before they came here. They tried to build everything around that sorry a#@ Paul Gasol and look how that fiasco ended up and now they want to go and get another Gasol when you have franchise type players in the draft.

I am simply putting race in its’ perspective and why is it that anytime a person brings race into something, it has to be a cope out??? I am simply calling it like I see it. Currently; I am season ticket holder and I can plainly see what this organization has done over the last 6 years or more.

I have no problem Kevin Love being here, but to go around the world to get a foreign player and you got a bumper crop of players in the draft even late into the second round is just plain short sighted.

This is not brain surgery and anyone can see this evolving into the same old fiasco like in past years.

Concern

Wayne

I think there is a misunderstanding here. The Grizz are not drafting Marc Gasol. They already own his draft rights, pursuant to the trade with the Lakers earlier this year. The Grizz will likely select the players they feel best fit their system with the 5th and 28th picks in the upcoming draft. So, Concern, your concern fails for a lack of understanding the deal.

As for not drafting or acquiring local players, I guess Lorenzen Wright and Antonio Burks don’t qualify as local? The Grizz gave both of them a fair chance, with Wright receiving a very nice financial package.

As for not acquiring black players, I guess drafting Shane Battier, Kyle Lowry, Hakim Warrick, Rudy Gay, and Michael Conley, all in the first round doesn’t count?

Look, I will be the first to admit that the Brian Cardninal deal was a mistake, but to assume it is proof of racism is off the scope.

Running of black players? Really? Name one. Battier was part of a trade. Wells was a headcase, and remains a headcase in Houston. Posey left on his own accord to attempt to win a ring (which he has done twice). Good for him. But, none were run off.

As for whom the Grizz should draft this year, I hope it is the best player, whether they be white, black, or other. Race simply shouldn’t matter, especially as building a winning team is what this city expects.

Here is my point, the Grizz certainly aren’t racist. They are, however, a bad team that has made more than its share of mistakes. But calling that racism is going more than just a little too far. Finally, if you really are a season ticket holder and are so “concerned”, why are you still buying tickets? Vote with your feet if you dislike the product.

Rob

Look be realistic here. The Grizzlies aren’t racist and don’t make moves based on people’s race. No pro franchise would EVER do that. They are doing what they think is best (even if many of us don’t agree with their mark of “best”) because their jobs and reputations are on the line. To imply they would rather choose white players and extend white players and not black players unless they went to Duke is absolutely absurd and isn’t worth discussing on here. I am really sad that we have people here that think that way. So with that I am done on here with this insane topic.

Concern

Wayne,Rob

Both of you are wearing Blinders, but I am not going dwell on this fiasco. Clearly and anyone can see the Grizzlies have not made the best decisions for this franchise and both of you know it.

The only reason the last three players were black was because the Great Jerry West was trying to save face because of all his past mistakes and by the way, his mistakes are still haunting us. He ran off the best coach we have had thus far in Hubie Brown. Since then, no one coach has come close.

I am not trying to win popularity contest here nor do I need either one of you’all’s approval. I’ve watch this madness go on every since the Grizzlies have been here.

To suggest that they have done what is best for the franchise is a laughing joke. All one has to do look at the state of the franchise. But you know what, I am finished here concerning this subject.

Oh yeah, I realize we own the rights of Paul Gasol’s younger brother, but we couldn’t own them unless we had opted for them in a previous draft.
They do not just fall in your lap. lol

Wayne, I feel like you are getting really personal when you suggest what I can do with my season tickets. You are way out of line trying to suggest what I do with my money. Secondly, if you do not like my comments, don’t read or respond to them. “Take that advice”.

Bottom line, everyone got an opinion and I have stated mine whether you agree with it or not. It is a good thing that I do not need either your approvals.

Both of you can take the so call high road, but the fact of the matter is, the Grizzlies losing worser and worser with each passing year and the attendance is way down. Even the local sports analyst have admitted that the Grizzlies have disconnect with their fans. I suppose they are mistaken as well… right!

Concern seriously race??? And memphis does not have good players??? what about mike miller???? hey and pau gasol is so gifted??? now what about rudy gay???? seriously a long post does not mean a correct comment

Bob

Grizzs will be out of town in less than 3 years. Count on it.

herschel

Talk about racism! I was shocked by the racist comments “fans” made about Kevin Love after his fantastic workout here. When was the last time any big man made 9 of 10 elbow jumpers followed by 7 of 10 NBA 3 pointers? Not to mention his passing and ability to get to the hoop against several different 7 footers? If he was black, he’d be lionized as the next Grizzlies star. Instead, people were swearing they’d “leave town” if Love were picked. True ignorance and bigotry. Gasol is rated the best center in Europe and if that means he’s better than Milicic, hallelujah. If Dorsey is the best player on the board at 28, they’ll take him. If he’s not, they won’t. Do you remember his preening at the Plush Club? Now imagine if he has a million dollars in his pocket.

Jhon

Gasol was the best player of this franchise. Some people does not like him just because hi is white and European.

WTF

Concern, got news for you: you are racist!!

seriously???

Concern,

Are you serious??? Exactly what black players have the Grizz not extended that you would like to have seen continue to play here?

Because I’ve got news for you…

Stromile - full of strotential and is not worth crap for 78 games a year
Lorenzen - was the Grizz’s best post presence, but getting too old to play at the NBA level.
Bonzi - headcase as aforementioned
JWill - nah… he just thought he was black
Posey - left to win a ring
Eddie Jones - ancient
Dahntay Jones - no loner in the league
Earl Watson - no better than Conley or Lowry
Wesley Person - ancient
Burks - no longer in the league
Andre Emmett - no longer in the league

Am I missing the amazing black players that the Grizz have had and let get away.

If you are complaining that they went out and signed Darko, who would you suggest that they signed? They didn’t sign him because he was white. They signed him because he is a 7′ post player with potential and they signed him to a short contract.

Just another racist note for concern:

Pau was the last white guy drafted in the 1st rd by the Grizz and that was 7 years ago. Robert Archibald was drafted 6 years ago in the 2nd rd. Other than that all picks have been black guys.

negroes

As always there are “racists comments”, usually coming from blacks, i’m a whitie european, mate.

I live in a building older than your country.

A recoger algodon negros de mierda.

Wayne

Wait a minute, I am supposed to sit here and listen to a stupid rant on the allegedly “racist Grizz”, which you cannot substantiate and support with any facts, and not point out the hypocrisy of your position when you openly claim to have season tickets?

Wow. That is amazing.

Here’s the thing, if you want to find racism, you probably can anywhere if you look hard and and bend reality to fit your preconcieved notions. But to believe that the Grizz are racist is phenomenally stupid (there, is that person enough for you). Further, if you have this phenomenally stupid belief, it is exceedingly hypocritical to support the Grizz. For, if we are to assume you are correct, then it can only logically follow that you are expressly aiding racism.

So, here is the heart of your argument, “Concerned”. You believe the Grizz are racist, but don’t care enough to not support them. What does that make you?
