Dan Wolken

I’ve gotten a couple calls from people today insisting that it wasn’t the Arizona coaching staff that tipped off Jeff Goodman on the Abdul Gaddy phone call. I don’t know whether it’s true or not, and I certainly was not trying to say definitively in my blog this morning that Arizona was behind this. I was merely speculating on how the story could have come to the attention of a national columnist — most likely through the coaching staff of another school — and Arizona is obviously the team that is most involved in the Gaddy recruitment.

Second, Memphis is getting a visit this weekend from Will Coleman, the Dorsey-esque 6-9 power forward from Miami-Dade Community College. Coleman originally signed with Arkansas-Little Rock but had to go the Juco route. He’s a guy who was being recruited at Pittsburgh by Orlando Antigua, who is now on the Memphis staff. Coleman was at the Memphis elite camp earlier this summer and is a major physical specimen. I didn’t see enough to get a feel for his skills.

Way to back pedal Wolken. Your journalistic credibility and integrity are really shining through.

“I certainly was not trying to say definitively in my blog this morning that Arizona was behind this. I was merely SPECULATING ”

If you don’t have a legitimate source, then why even mention why try to soil the name of Arizona and Lute Olson?

Because you’re a Memphis homer who is continually getting on his knees for Coach Cal in hopes of one day getting a scoop on some legit news and graduating to a real job.

That’s me “merely speculating” moron. Stop crying over spilled milk and learn how to report.

IRISH MIKE

Looks like Lute’s not the only one delusional
in Tucson.

KH

Irish Mike, what time is Dan picking you up for your date tonight? Are you getting down on your knees for him like he is for Cal?

IRISH MIKE

It must be the dry heat that makes people stupid.
KH are you really Lute ??

Brian

Irish Mike, check your facts. Lute has been on vacation in Europe when this entire saga has played out. There’s no way Lute could have tipped Goodman off because Lute wouldn’t have known about a call that was placed while Lute was unreachable.

Now Dan here is even saying he has no proof that Arizona did anything, and it’s speculation, but there’s evidence to contradict his speculation, so really no one’s being loyal to Lute, they’re just refuting a bogus report, or trying to prove that this blog holds no weight.

That’s all. Now if you want to be “delusional” and keep arguing with people who have facts about the situation, go ahead, but you’re on the wrong side of the argument.

IRISH MIKE

Lute Olson is a legend and a great Hall of Fame coach. Have to defend ” the getting on your knees
for coach Cal” comment, just like you defend your
guy. I have found in recruiting the facts have very little pull with the fan base and almost
all of us are delusional for our team.

datzMRDorsey

Thought they had phones in Europe. It’s funny though, that of the jaundiced journalistic purests coming out with criticizing the blog’s integrity for lack of references, they quote myspace for their principle, authoritative source. LOL Pots meet kettle. Nice.

Bryan

You are still an idiot.

hamcat

hey Brian, what is the “evidence to contradict his speculation”?

Raleigh_Bartlett

So what!! if Dan is pro Memphis and what the he@$ is wrong with that? You think for one moment the Dick Vitale and others, too many to mention here, are not pro ACC or any BCS conference for that matter.

So you would have me believe that phones do not work out of the country. I call people out of the country at least once a week. And the way Lute Olson has been behaving of late really disturbs me especially the way he treated Negedu about his decommitment from Arizona. “I wanted him to have to sweat awhile before I released him” Lute is clearly a control freak!!!

“My way or the Highway” bullsh%t!!!!!

“He should (Negedu) know what commitment means” Did not Lute commit to coach Arizona last year??? I wish I could take a whole year off with pay and make millions because I am getting a divorce. Can anybody on this website do that?? Hell, I do not many college coaches that could have pulled that off.

Then this guy comes back a year later and fire everyone. Clearly, this is not Hall of Fame material. Just a few weeks ago, he indicated he would not recruit any one and done players anymore. He acts if these type of players really need him. “What an ego/joke”

I do not know why any elite player in his right mind would go and play for an ego maniac like Lute anyway. And now he is on another paid vacation. “Give me a DAMN break” He would not promote his top recruiter Josh after being with him for years and this is how rewards loyalty. He fired his ex-star player Miles Simone who took him to a Nat’l Championship.

Then Lute demands that Josh does not recruit Abdul Gaddy when he gets hired by Memphis. “Is this guy for real”??? You think for one moment that Abdul Gaddy is not a one and done player. If not, you are kidding yourself.

Heck, we here at Memphis were recruiting Abdul Gaddy long before we hired Josh, and now Lute thinks he can dictate who we recruit. He really sounds like an old man that has past his prime and needs to be set out to pasture and possibly put down. lol

It is just a matter of time before Arizona and Lute Olson part ways. They are just trying to wait until the right time to do so because it is widely known that the entire administration at Arizona is not pleased with Lute’s behavior, but are showing him respect because of his past record.

Pretty soon, he will have used up all of his chips and at the rate he is going; I will give him about year of two if he is lucky and their will be a divorce in Arizona. “Tucson” Mark my words.

Q Dog

KH and Brian It was definitely Lute that called Goodman his get down on his knees guy, with the story Gaddy’s Mom told Lute, Lute Told Goodman. Get your Facts straight. However we just shake off the haters. GO TIGERS!!!! GO COACH CAL!!! GO DAN!!!

brian

First, I never quoted a myspace page, so whoever thinks that is definitely wrong.

Second Q Dog, it’s been reported that Lute is out of the country, and is not in contact with recruits or their families. He’s been in touch with his staff, but Dan’s article was written less than 24 hours after the call was made to Gaddy’s mom. So explain to me how Lute, who hasn’t had any contact with Gaddy’s family in that time period, regardless if the phones worked or not, could have spoken to Gaddy’s mom, gotten the info, then called Dan to give him the scoop, and then had Dan write a full article on it, while on vacation in Europe with some of his family??

Tigerfan

The phone call was placed in early July not 24 hours before Dan wrote his article.

Q Dog

Brian, Once AGAIN get your facts straight, way to come in there Tigerfan!!

Chado

Obviously the ship is sinking at Arizona(Negedu,Gaddy, Jennings) perhaps they are just throwing ropes out trying not to go under, or just pull everyone down with them…
Just retire Lute, go out with what little bit of dignity you have left.

Tigertg

No matter who told who what. Its a know fact goodman has an agenda. The chip on his shoulder might just cost him his credibility. If he looses that he can look for a new occupation. This one will play out in time!

TripleA

Reality check. Phones work in Europe. The call was made in early July. But Lute did NOT call Goodman. Abdul Gaddy told him about the Bronczek call, and Goodman then saw Gaddy’s mom at the tourney in Vegas and asked her about it.

Wolken was wrong, should not have specualted, and is a homer, but all of us on here are homers. Wolken is usually accurate. At least he doesn’t exhibit open glee when reporting something about antoher school, which he rarely does. Goodman has said in radio interviews that he does not like Calipari and holds a grudge against him.

Comments here prove that people on both sides can say anything sitting at their keyboards without bothering to read up or check any facts.

Lost in all this is that Bronczek did make the call, but it’s a minor violation and will probably result in a letter of reprimand from the NCAA to him.

camebd

Man, there are so many things said on here wrong, I don’t know where to start… and I probably won’t address many.

One major one is Lute Olson was not out of the country between the time when Mrs. Gaddy got the call from Broncznek and when Jeff spoke to Mrs. Gaddy. Good timing for Lute. Another is he did not report it immediately. He sat on it for a week before reporting it… just before the July recruiting period ended. Good timing again.

I would like to know if Dan W. ever reads or responds to these posts. If so, I would like for him to answer a question… do you or do you not believe in your gut that Goodman was tipped off by someone with Arizona? I’m not asking what you can prove but what you really believe. I believe he was. It is what makes the most sense.

Here are the two possibilities: A) Jeff Goodman is the luckiest man in the world, stepping into the perfect story that would both hurt his old nemesis Calipari and get Memphis investigated by the NCAA, while also helping his alma mater get a major recruit. He just happened to walk up to this one woman in a sea of thousands of boys, parents, guardians and friends to get this specific story. Wow, that is lucky. That’s some major coincidences. Or…

B)Lute, or someone on Lute’s staff, talked with her or the son, found out about the phone call (because she didn’t think anything was wrong with it and was excited). Lute, or someone on the staff, contacted their old friend who they know hates Memphis and gave him a tip. Goodman waited until the AAU event and then went straight to them and asked about it. He got his story, sat on it a week until Lute was out of the country… and also so he could figure out how to best do this so to not tip his hand… and then dropped his bombshell. But to make him look like a good guy, he contacted RC Johnson to give him a heads up. But not wanting to risk Johnson would be dishonest and not self report, Goodman went ahead and called the NCAA himself to let them know. They he reported the very story he himself created. Now that’s journalistic integrity!!

Whether Lute called or someone on his staff, it is irrelevant. (Like Lute is going to admit, “oh yeah, I called Jeff.” Please And don’t give me this junk about Lute being a hall of fame coach. He has proven over and over he is human. He is a fine coach, but he is not above pulling a stunt like this. And in all fairness, I doubt Calipari is above it as well. They all do it.

I believe the real story is not the booster who clearly messed up or even if someone from Arizona tipped Goodman off. The real story is that a so called journalist used his power in the media to attack and hurt someone he has a personal problem with while also helping his old buddy Lute Olson and his alma mater Arizona land a great recruit. He deserves to be fired and every Memphis fan should be burning up the major sports sites, especially foxsports.com, saying so until it is investigated. I would personally love to see Lute’s and Jeff’s phone records. Wouldn’t you??

ybbodeus

Color me reactionary, here, but just what is it about the blog title “memphisedge.com” that would suggest it’s supposed to be non-partisan/non-denominational, so to speak?

Tucson myopians. Some of you almost make me want to cheer for those Sun Devil pukes.
