The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals have made back-page news recently with a couple of outlandish campaigns I simply have to mention.
First, because they believe the act of milking a cow constitutes cruelty to animals, they sent a letter late last month to the makers of Ben & Jerry’s ice cream, asking them to use breast milk instead.
Human breast milk.
Then today, I received a press release from PETA, announcing a national campaign to change the name of fish.
From this point forward, they’d like you to refer to fish as “sea kittens.”
They believe the new name will tug at peoples’ heart strings, causing them to think twice about hooking fish, keeping them and eating them.
I could probably write 15 columns about these two topics. But frankly, I’ve grown bored with pointing out the obvious about this ridiculous group of crackpots.
You draw your own conclusions - and drop me a line if the notion strikes you.

The Ben & Jerry’s thing was ALL over the news–hardly “back page.” And even Ben & Jerry’s recognized it for the lighthearted tongue in cheek proposal it was…though you seemingly missed this. The fact that you are writing about it shows it’s good marketing. Whether you agree with them or not they do know how to raise awareness. I have seen many discussions come out of this about the effed up dairy industry that somehow I don’t think would have taken place had they sent out press releases just about the cruelty that takes place. Catchy, cute little things like these ideas that get national attention are probably why groups like this are growing by leaps and bounds in membership and support. Now if only the nudists were so pro-active. ;)

I haven’t seen any evidence that these groups are growing by leaps and bounds, Hales…But I appreciate the great comment. Very well-written.
