OK, so now that the quarterback situation has been settled — for the time being, at least — there’s always the battle for the punting job, which, no joke, has been really competitive. One player who might have been overshadowed during Saturday afternoon’s scrimmage by the continuing quarterback saga? Greg Hardy, who has positioned himself quite nicely to do a little of everything — check that, a lot of everything — for the Rebels this season. Hardy was solid at defensive end, which has been de rigueur for the sophomore since he arrived at Ole Miss last season, fresh off a standout career at Briarcrest Christian. Some good work being done in the community by the Ole Miss basketball team, which plans to stop by St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital on Friday afternoon. (The Rebels play Memphis at FedExForum on Saturday.)
According to the press release sent out by the school, “At least one patient has expressed to being a long-time, loyal Ole Miss basketball fan.” Well, I suppose that’s a step in the right direction. Maybe they’ll gain a few more. But for the time being, these Rebels might struggle with the hometown crowd at St. Jude’s. I can see some young boy or girl looking up at Dwayne Curtis, Ole Miss’ junior center, and exclaiming, “You’re no Robert Dozier!” But we digress.

Listening to Ole Miss coach Andy Kennedy talk about his team, it might be easy to overlook the fact that the Rebels are 7-1. Granted, Ole Miss hasn’t faced the toughest schedule — with the exception of UConn, Ole Miss has faced such heavyweights as Central Arkansas, Tennessee Tech and Nicholls State — but Kennedy sees lots of flaws.
First and foremost, the Rebels have exhibited a troubling habit of digging serious holes. They trailed Tennessee Tech by 10 in the second half … and won. They trailed Nicholls State by six at halftime … and won. They trailed New Orleans on Friday night by four at halftime … and won.
