The only time you can legally kill any snake - venomous or non-venomous - is when you truly believe it is posing a threat to you or your family. Some snakes (like the pygmy rattler) are even listed as a protected species. But if I find a copperhead in my backyard where I spend lots of time doing lots of yard work, it's toast.
